Approximately $102,000 worth of vintage whiskey is gone forever after being consumed by one Pennsylvania man. The Today News Gazette reported on Saturday, March 23, 2013, that the man discovered the liquor under the stairs of his rented apartment, and decided to have a little party all by himself.
John Saunders rented his apartment from homeowner Patricia Hill in Pennsylvania. She had discovered the whiskey back in 1986 while doing renovations on the home. She actually believes that it dates back to the Prohibition era.
Patricia Hill started out by finding around 100 bottles of the whiskey, but now 48 of them are forever lost.
The 60-year-old Saunders has been charged with drinking around $102,000 worth of the whiskey that Hill had discovered buried in her basement. Saunders told police that he moved the crate around while he was cleaning, but did nothing more. He originally denied drinking the whiskey and removing the labels.
Hill asked Saunders what happened to the whiskey, and the tenant said that it probably "evaporated."
After Hill contacted the police, Chief Barry Pritts says that Saunders also denied drinking the whiskey to him. Saunders actually said that the whiskey was "no good" since it was so old. With that being said, the police got a search warrant for Saunders' DNA.
A few lab tests later and Saunders' saliva was discovered on at least three of the bottles of whiskey, and he now faces criminal charges.
